Reflective Clothing

Construction jobs and the chemical industry have to constantly battle against the high occurrence of accidents. Many of these accidents cause severe injury to the workers, and in far too many cases, have costs the employees their lives. In reaction, the government put into effect requirements for workers to wear reflective clothing like hi vis jackets and safety vests to create a safer working environment.

Hi vis vests have found their way into a number of industries and prevent accidents every single day. These vests make fellow construction workers easily visible to heavy machine operators. Construction workers have also made great use of safety vests on roadside jobs. The high visibility clothing makes it easy for workers to be spotted by passing motorists. Even if the worker is simply directing traffic, it is important for them to be easily seen.

Traffic controllers have also been able to make use of reflective clothing to make their jobs safer and easier. When guiding an airplane on the runway, the controllers can be easily picked out by pilots, even in darker conditions.

Similarly, railway employees who work near the tracks are required to wear high visibility clothing to avoid accidents as they go about their work.

Of course firefighters make use of reflective clothing. In areas of thick, dense smoke, it allows them to keep a line of site between each team member and to be easily spotted by those needing help.

Utilizing safety clothing does not mean that normal safety precautions can be overlooked. Wearing a reflective vest on a roadside construction job does not make a worker impervious to oncoming traffic. Yes, the drivers can see the workers more effectively, but jumping out from behind a parked truck while wearing a safety vest in front of a car is not going to increase that driver’s reaction time in trying to avoid the worker. All other safety precautions still need to be obeyed and inforced.

Whether a worker is working outside or inside, during the early morning hours, daytime, or evening, whether they are working near heavy equipment or directing traffic, there is no question that reflective clothing has made their jobs safer.
