Choosing a New Couch For Your Home

Choosing a new couch for your home should be viewed as an investment. Do not rush to make a purchase.  Your decision is one you are likely to be stuck with for the next 5-8 years or more.  Take your time to determine precisely what you desire in a new couch before heading to the local furniture stores to shop for one.

As with any significant purchase, it is a good idea to set a budget for yourself before you ever hit the showroom floor.  You can find suitable couches will cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.  If you do not set a budget before shopping, it is easy to fall in love with something that is out of your price range.

Informing the salesperson of your budget, can help them narrow down your choices right away, and assists them in finding the right couch for you.

It is important to take into consideration the type of use the couch will get when selecting your new one.  Is it just you and your spouse?  Do you have a large family?  Do you entertain a lot?  Are their pets in the house?  The couch is the primary piece of furniture in any room and, as a result, will see the most use.  Understanding who will use the couch and how much use it will get is going to guide you in choosing the appropriate material for it.

The next step is deciding where the couch is going to be.  Measure the area and bring those measurement with you when you visit the furniture dealer.  It will do you no good to find a couch you love that has no chance of fitting in the area you had planned on placing it.

Today, there are a variety of couches for you to choose from.  Some are equipped with recliners and cup holders.  Others have a sleeper function.  You can find corner couches, five-seaters, or just a loveseat.  If you do elect on a recliner couch, be certain that their is appropriate space in your designated location for it to recline.  Sleepers are generally more expensive, but if you have guests spending the night fairly often, they are much cheaper than a guest bedroom.

Be sure to select a couch with firm, quality material and construction.  Check to see how the cushions are supported.  A mesh support is less expensive, but will quickly lead to sagging.  Springs, on the other hand, create a resilient base.

Inspect how the couch is put together.  If it is held together with glue and/or staples, the couch will be less expensive, but it is also not going to last as long.  You want to find couches put together with screws and utilizing hardwoods for their frame material.

The benefit of shopping at one of your local furniture stores instead of online or at a discount store is that they will have a large variety of couches for you to sit on and try.  Do you like the feel of the upholstery?  Is the cushion thickness appropriate?  What about the depth and height of the couch?  If you have trouble standing from a seated position, buying a couch that sits to low is a big mistake that is easily avoidable by trying it out.  No matter how much you like the look of a couch, remember that if you are not comfortable sitting on it at the store, you probably will not get comfortable on it in your home and will only regret the purchase.

Before making that final decision to purchase, inquire about warranty coverage options.  Understand the terms of the warranty before making the selection.
